Shooting at night can be labourious and painful, shooting day for night (without filters) is the method I use. Here is my rough breakdown of how I put the scene together, its very simple really, you just have to really be careful of how you film your actors....do not shoot the sky...its a dead giveaway...
1. Shoot your film at twilight 2. Use wide master shots when the streetlights come on 3. White Balance to tungsten OR use a light yellow poster board to white balance the camera. This should give you an overall blue cast, which looks like bright moonlight. 4. underexpose by 1.5 to 2 stops 5. Try to shoot everything back or side-lighted.
